December 01, (THEWILL) — Lando Norris will have to wait until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to claim his first Formula One world championship after a costly McLaren strategy mistake in Qatar on Sunday. The British driver had the opportunity to seal the title at the Losail International Circuit but finished fourth, behind race winner, Max Verstappen of Red Bull and his own team-mate, Oscar Piastri, in second.
The pivotal error occurred on lap seven when McLaren opted not to bring their drivers into the pits following a safety car deployment, whilst their competitors all chose to stop for fresh tyres. The decision proved detrimental to both McLaren drivers, with Piastri losing what appeared to be a certain victory and Norris missing out on a podium finish.
Had Norris won in Qatar, he would have been crowned world champion with one race remaining. Instead, Verstappen’s victory has propelled the four-time world champion to second place in the standings, now trailing by just 12 points. Norris remains in control of his destiny and will claim the title if he finishes third or higher at Yas Marina next weekend, regardless of his rivals’ results.
The 26-year-old acknowledged the disappointment but maintained perspective on his strong recent form. “It is not our greatest day, it is not our greatest weekend,” Norris told reporters. “But I don’t know if anyone saw the run of results I had before? They were great. I put myself in this position and I am still happy. It was not my finest day in terms of driving and putting things together. That is life. Everyone has bad weekends. I take it on the chin, we all take it on the chin, and we will see what we can do next weekend.”
Team principal Andrea Stella defended the strategy call, insisting it was not influenced by concerns about favouring one driver over the other in the title fight. “It was a decision not to pit,” Stella said. “In fairness, we didn’t expect everyone else to pit. Once everyone pitted, it makes that the right thing to do. When you have the lead car, you don’t know what the others are going to do.” The championship battle now moves to the season finale in Abu Dhabi, where Norris will aim to convert his commanding points advantage into his maiden Formula One title.
