December 01, (THEWILL) — Barcelona midfielder, Aitana Bonmati, will be sidelined for a minimum of two months after sustaining a fractured left fibula during training with the Spanish national team on Sunday. The three-time Ballon d’Or winner experienced the injury following an accidental fall and bad landing during the morning session, ruling her out of Tuesday’s women’s Nations League final second leg against Germany.
The Spanish football federation confirmed the diagnosis after Bonmati completed the training session in pain. Catalan media outlets have reported the midfielder could face up to three months out of action if surgery becomes necessary. The 26-year-old had started in Friday’s goalless draw against Germany in the first leg of the Nations League final at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.
Bonmati’s absence will significantly impact Barcelona’s busy December fixture list, with crucial UEFA Champions League matches against Benfica and Paris FC scheduled for this month. The midfielder will also miss the Spanish Super Cup in January and multiple Liga F fixtures during her recovery period. Barcelona currently sit six points clear at the top of the domestic league table, ahead of Real Sociedad in second place.
The Catalan club shares top position in the UCL league phase standings with French side Lyon. Bonmati has been instrumental in Barcelona’s success this season, contributing both goals and assists across all competitions. Her injury is a considerable blow to both club and country during a critical phase of the campaign.
Barcelona’s medical team will continue to monitor Bonmati’s condition in the coming days to determine whether surgical intervention is required. The club has not yet provided an official return date, though the initial prognosis suggests she will remain unavailable until at least February 2025.
