October 26, (THEWILL) – On Tuesday, PSG star, Lionel Messi, was in spectacular form, as he not only smashed another of rival, Cristiano Ronaldo’s UEFA Champions League records, but entered a class of his own in Europe’s top five leagues.
The Argentine’s goal in PSG’s first match against Maccabi Haifa made him the first player to score in the competition against 39 different teams, and his second goal on Tuesday meant that he now has more goals from outside the box (23) than anyone else in the competition since his debut in the 2004/2005 season, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo by one.
Messi has the highest goal-contribution ratio of any player in the top five leagues in Europe this season, making him the only one with at least 10 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.
Messi put on an explosive performance as Christophe Galtier’s PSG swept aside their Israeli opponents 7-2. At 35 years, 123 days, Messi also set a record for the oldest player to score and assist twice in a UCL game with a stunning effort.
