June 07, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi has officially announced his imminent move to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.
In an interview with Barcelona-based publications, Mundo Deportivo and Sport, Messi revealed his decision to join the United States-based club. While not yet finalised, the Argentine superstar expressed his determination to pursue this new chapter in his career: “I’ve made the decision that I’m going to Miami. It’s still not a done deal 100 percent. I’m missing a few things, but we’ve decided to keep going down the path.”
The MLS and Inter Miami are currently working out the details for the potential signing of the 35-year-old football icon, as THEWILL reported earlier. Messi recently concluded his contract with Paris Saint-Germain after his two-year deal with the French Ligue 1 side expired. The Argentine icon had been eager to have his future resolved in the coming days. While Barcelona had expressed interest in re-signing him, significant financial obstacles hindered a potential return to the Catalan club.
In addition, Messi had received a lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabian team, Al Hilal, which had been on the table for several months. However, Inter Miami, who had been pursuing Messi for several years, appeared increasingly confident in their pursuit. It will be a landmark acquisition for MLS and a major coup for Inter Miami when it is finalised.
Furthermore, Messi’s arrival would be a significant boost for football in the United States, particularly as the country prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
