February 19, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling match at the Parc des Princes, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe saved the day for Paris Saint-Germain with a dramatic 4-3 win over Lille.
Despite an early lead, thanks to Mbappe and Neymar and an early formation setback for Lille, with the substitution of José Fonte with Leny Yoro due to injury, PSG’s chances looked slim when Neymar was himself forced off with an ankle injury and Lille pulled ahead 3-2 through Jonathan Bamba’s stunning goal.
Bafode Diakite’s header and a penalty awarded to Jonathan David, had initially seen Lille fight their way back into the game after PSG had initially looked in control.
However, Mbappe’s 87th-minute goal drew PSG level once more, setting the stage for Messi to work his way to the headlines around the fixture. The Argentine’s stoppage-time free-kick went into the net off the upright to secure the victory for the home side. It was a dramatic end that brought the Parc des Princes to its feet in applause.
The win keeps PSG at the top of Ligue 1, but it was not without its challenges. Neymar’s injury will be a concern for the team, and Lille’s determined performance shows that the race for the title is far from over. Nonetheless, PSG will be buoyed by the heroics of Messi and Mbappe as they look ahead to their next match, away against second-placed Marseille. Lille will play Brest on Friday.
