September 23, (THEWILL) – After a glittering career, Lionel Messi has offered insight into his life after football. The Argentinian maestro moved to Inter Miami this summer, beginning what he called a “decompression” from the game.
Messi cemented his legacy as one of the greatest ever players by leading Argentina to the World Cup crown. He made a superb start to life in Miami, scoring in his first seven games. However, a hectic schedule has caught up with the 36-year-old recently. Messi missed matches for club and country with fatigue last month.
In a recent interview, Messi reflected on his career and future. He said he would like to become a sporting director or coach kids. In 2022, Messi also said he wanted to be a sporting director, although he did not intend to coach. He noted Zinedine Zidane had similar thoughts before winning three Champions Leagues as manager.
After winning the World Cup, Messi is unsure whether he will play in the 2026 tournament. He wants to defend Argentina’s Copa America title in 2024. On 2026, Messi said: “I haven’t thought about it yet, it’s far away.” He noted that the 2024 Copa America will be held in the US.
Before any future plans, Messi is contracted to Miami until 2025. He turned down other offers to move to the MLS side. “The idea was to start decompressing after so many years of my career,” Messi said. “To enjoy somewhere else. And I am.”
