April 09, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain got their Ligue 1 title defence back on track with a 2-0 victory over Nice on Saturday, thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos.
The result was PSG’s first win in three games after back-to-back defeats. Gianluigi Donnarumma was also instrumental in the victory as he made excellent saves to deny Nice. Although Nice peppered the PSG goal, they failed to convert any of their chances and suffered their first defeat under Didier Digard.
PSG dominated the game and could have scored an opener when Danilo Pereira’s header hit the post. Messi scored the first goal in the 26th minute and supplied the cross from a corner for Ramos’ second-half header. Nice kept pushing forward but Donnarumma kept denying their attempts, and the momentum continued into the second half.
With 21 shots to 13 from PSG, Nice will rue the chances they missed, with Dante’s effort bouncing off the crossbar and back out via the post without fully crossing the goal line. The win was vital for PSG as they needed to restore a six-point cushion to second-placed Lens. Mbappe, who needs one more goal to surpass Edinson Cavani as the club’s outright all-time leading scorer in the competition, was not able to score in the game and was ruled offside in the closing minutes.
Nice will play against Basel on Thursday, in the Europa Conference League, while PSG will face Lens next Saturday, in a table-topping Ligue 1 clash.
