March 23, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona could be in the offing as chances of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain are on the increase.
The 35-year-old moved to PSG in the summer of 2021 after Barcelona’s financial difficulties made negotiations for a new contract impossible. The move ended his 21-year association with the Catalan club.
PSG hoped to secure their first ever UEFA Champions League win with the addition of Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, but the team fell out of the competition in the round of 16 stage against Bayern Munich. Messi’s official contract is set to expire in the summer, with PSG able to extend it by a 12-month option if the player agrees.
Despite negotiations for a new contract being amicable, PSG’s hopes of securing Messi’s future have all but disappeared, prompting talks with other interested parties. Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia and David Beckham’s Inter Miami have both presented offers to the football legend to influence his decision.
However, reports suggest that Messi’s return to Barcelona, his former home, is looking increasingly possible, and it appears the Catalan giants are eager to bring their superstar back home.
