June 19, (THEWILL) – Mexico’s football authorities have sacked national team coach, Diego Cocca, following their defeat in the CONCACAF Nations League to the United States last week.
Cocca, an Argentine coach, who was appointed in February, was set to lead El Tri in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup starting this Saturday. However, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) decided to make a change after a convincing 3-0 loss to the USA in the Nations League semi-finals and a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama on Sunday.
FMF President, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, revealed the urgency of the situation when he said: “Today, we don’t have time to waste.” In light of this impatience and sudden dismissal, Mexican coach, Jaime Lozano, has been named as the interim replacement for the national team during the Gold Cup, according to Rodriguez.
Mexico’s disappointing performance in the Nations League adds to a string of underwhelming displays, including their failure to progress past the group stage in the 2022 World Cup. The decision to terminate Cocca’s contract signals the FMF’s determination to address the team’s lacklustre displays promptly and make a fresh start under new leadership.
