
December 01, (THEWILL) –Â Following the NBA’s investigation into free-agent discussions between the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls, the league has decided that both teams will forfeit their next available second-round picks.
The league’s investigation focused on potential tampering violations involving Kyle Lowry (now with the Heat) and Lonzo Ball (now with the Bulls) sign-and-trade deals that were completed in free agency.
According to the NBA, both clubs broke league regulations controlling the timing of free agency talks by jumping the gun on talks with Lowry and Ball.
The league ruled that the Heat’s transaction for Lowry and the Bulls’ acquisition of Ball were particularly egregious, because they were sign-and-trade agreements (which require the consent of two teams and at least one player) that were publicised inside the first minutes of free agency.
The league informed teams in a document that the Bulls and Heat “fully cooperated with the investigations,” which was factored into the fines.
Both teams issued comments admitting the fines and stating that they are going on with their seasons. However, the Heat stated that they disagree with the league’s decision.
The Bucks were fined a second-round selection last year for signing Bogdan Bogdanovic too early in free agency. Bogdanovic ended up in Atlanta rather than Milwaukee in that scenario — the Heat and Bulls both acquired their free agent goals — thus it is surprising the two franchises did not face heavier penalties this time.
The Heat and Bulls have both traded away many of their forthcoming second-round picks, so they may not have to sacrifice one for a few years.
Miami has traded all of its second-round picks through 2027, according to RealGM, though the 2024 pick is top-50 protected and might stay with the Heat. All of Chicago’s second-round picks have been exchanged until 2025.
