April 01, (THEWILL) – Jannik Sinner pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, and secure a spot in the Miami Open final.
The Italian had to recover from a set down to eventually triumph 6-7(4) 6-4 6-2 against the talented Spaniard. Sinner’s victory sets up a final showdown with Daniil Medvedev, who overcame Karen Khachanov in a tough encounter in the other semi-final matchup.
Despite a strong start from Sinner, Alcaraz came back strongly to take the first set on a tie-break. Sinner found himself 4-3 down in the second set and facing two break points, but he managed to hold his serve and win the next two games to level things up. In the third set, Sinner took advantage of Alcaraz’s cramps to break early and take a decisive lead, eventually securing the victory.
Alcaraz, who had been world number one, will now lose his top spot to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian will return to the top of the ATP rankings following his recent victory at Indian Wells. Sinner, on the other hand, will be looking to secure his first ATP 1000 title when he faces Medvedev in the final.
