January 15, (THEWILL) – AC Milan claimed an important 3-1 victory, against AS Roma on Sunday night, at the San Siro stadium. The result extends Milan’s undefeated home streak against Roma to six matches and moves them to within nine points of league leaders Inter Milan.
Despite Roma controlling the early exchanges, it was Milan who seized the advantage in 11 minutes through an acrobatic Yacine Adli finish for his first goal this campaign. Theo Hernandez then rattled the crossbar for Milan, whilst Roma’s Zeki Celik and Leandro Spinazzola forced top saves from Mike Maignan to keep the score at 1-0 Milan at half-time.
The second half saw Milan grow into the game, but they were initially wasteful in front of goal as Matteo Gabbia missed a free header. Veteran striker, Olivier Giroud, made no mistake on 56 minutes, heading home his 10th league goal this term after being picked out by Simon Kjaer.
Roma set up a tense finale when Leandro Paredes scored a penalty in 69 minutes, but Theo Hernandez restored Milan’s two-goal cushion with a thunderous strike off the bar following a nice play from Giroud.
The 3-1 result leaves Roma winless in three consecutive away matches for the first time since 2021 and short of European qualification places in ninth spot. Meanwhile, AC Milan move to within nine points of city rivals Inter at the Serie A summit as the title race heats up.
