March 20, (THEWILL) – A 1-0 win away to Cagliari was enough for AC Milan to move three points clear of Napoli and six points ahead of Inter at the top of the Serie A standings on Saturday night.
In the second half, Ismael Bennacer scored the game’s sole goal, and Milan survived a couple of scares late on to earn a deserved one-goal victory and ride the pressure of the chasing duo of city rivals Inter Milan and Napoli.
The Rossoneri got out to a fast start and were the only team to threaten in the first half, with Theo Hernandez surging forward from deep and directing many of their attempts. In front of Alessio Cragno’s goal, though, Olivier Giroud was relatively quiet.
The game even out in the second half, despite Milan having the upper hand for much of it, and they ultimately scored when Bennacer concluded a wonderful passing move. The ball was methodically played to Giroud on the outskirts of the box, where he teed up Bennacer with a slice of luck as the ball rebounded nicely for him to volley into the bottom corner.
Milan’s goal had a lucky escape near the end of the 90, and the Sardinians struck Mike Maignan’s crossbar as they attempted to pour late pressure on their opponents, but the Rossoneri held on for the win.
Milan now have 66 points while Napoli, which drew level with Milan earlier, after Victor Osimhen’s brace gave them a 2-1 win against Udinese, have 63 and Inter dropped two massive points to hang on to third with 60 points. However, the latter, who are defending champions, still have a game left to play.
