March 14, (THEWILL) – AC Milan missed out on an opportunity to gain ground on their Serie A rivals for a top-four finish after Boulaye Dia cancelled out Olivier Giroud’s first-half opener in a 1-1 draw with Salernitana at San Siro.

Milan had the chance to take advantage of slip-ups from Inter, Lazio, and Roma in the Champions League race on Monday. The defending champions dominated possession but Salernitana’s defense kept them at bay, only conceding on the stroke of halftime.

Giroud looked set to have given Milan an important win and maximum points but Salernitana hit back through Dia just after the hour mark. Milan was also denied a penalty after a video assistant referee (VAR) review following Ismael Bennacer’s fall under Domagoj Bradaric’s challenge.

The result means Milan remains fourth, just a point clear of fifth-placed Roma in the tense battle for UEFA Champions League qualification. Milan’s next match is against Udinese on Saturday, while Salernitana face Bologna at the Stadio Arechi in Salerno.
