May 06, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan kept themselves on track for a top-four finish in Serie A after a 2-0 victory against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
The Nerazzurri took the lead in the first half through Federico Dimarco’s close-range finish before Romelu Lukaku sealed the three points with a breakaway strike 16 minutes from time. This win puts Simone Inzaghi’s team back in the top four and boosts their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Despite injuries causing several stoppages and limiting chances, Inter took the lead just after the half-hour mark. Roma continued to fight back and were upset when Matteo Darmian avoided punishment for a handball in the box shortly before the hour mark, with tempers continuing to boil over.
However, with just over a quarter of an hour to go, a defensive mistake from Roger Ibanez allowed Inter to make the most of a long ball downfield, and Lukaku sealed the win for the visitors. This defeat leaves Jose Mourinho’s Roma side five points off the top four with just four games remaining.
Both Inter and Roma will now turn their attention to the European semi-final first legs in midweek, with Interfacing city rivals AC Milan in the UCL League, and Roma hosting Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League.
