June 29 (THEWILL) — Intensified military operations against insurgents in Nigeria’s North-East have forced another group of senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) leaders to surrender, with the military also confirming that 76 terrorist fighters and members of their families laid down their arms within the past week.
The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), announced the development on Sunday, describing it as another major milestone in its sustained counter-terrorism campaign against Boko Haram and ISWAP.
According to the military, the latest wave of surrenders followed sustained offensives supported by credible, timely and actionable intelligence, which have continued to dismantle terrorist enclaves and disrupt their operational networks across the theatre.
In a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the military said the surrendered insurgents include key figures within the ISWAP hierarchy who abandoned their camps due to relentless pressure mounted by troops.
The statement noted that the former terrorist leaders have been moved to a secure location, where they are undergoing profiling, debriefing and other established procedures in accordance with existing operational protocols.
Operation HADIN KAI said the latest breakthrough reflects the growing impact of sustained military operations, which have continued to destroy terrorist strongholds, disrupt command and logistics structures, and deny insurgents freedom of movement across the North-East.
It added that the persistent offensive has significantly degraded the terrorists’ combat capabilities while weakening morale and confidence within their ranks and leadership.
According to the military, no fewer than 76 terrorist foot soldiers, alongside some members of their families, surrendered to troops within the last one week, underscoring what it described as the increasing effectiveness of ongoing operations.
The task force attributed the successes to a comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy that combines precision combat operations, intelligence-led engagements and coordinated joint efforts with other security agencies and strategic partners.
Reaffirming its commitment to ending the insurgency, Operation HADIN KAI said troops would sustain the pressure on the remaining terrorist elements until they are completely neutralised or compelled to surrender.
