June 06, (THEWILL) – James Milner has agreed to a new short-term contract with Liverpool to keep him at the club next season.
The 36-year-old’s contract is set to end this summer, and he is said to have had multiple offers, notably from other English Premier League clubs and sides in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Instead, Milner agreed to a new one-year contract deal with Liverpool, accepting terms lower than he could have gotten elsewhere to stay at Anfield.
Milner stated in May that he wanted to continue at Liverpool beyond this summer, but that he would only do so if he thought he would be given a fair chance to add something to the squad.
He had said at the time: “Liverpool is an incredible place to play football and we have a great bunch of guys, but that is the point isn’t it, to play football? I just want to contribute. If I feel like I’m not contributing enough and I’m a passenger for the guys then it’s not really worth it.”
Milner played 39 times for Liverpool in all competitions last season, 15 of them as a starter, as a backup to both midfielders and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
