August 12, (THEWILL) – French football star, Wissam Ben Yedder, was charged on Friday, with sexual assault offences over alleged acts in the French Riviera last month, prosecutors said.
The Monaco and France forward was charged with rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault stemming from complaints filed by two women, who accused him and his brother of forcing them into sexual acts after a night out in July. The 32-year-old was detained for 48 hours this week before being released on bail of €900,000. As part of his conditional release, he will be under judicial supervision but is still permitted to play for his club.
The allegations surfaced last month when prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme confirmed two rape complaints had been filed against two individuals. According to the reports, two women aged 19 and 20 accused the Ben Yedder brothers of the alleged assaults.
Ben Yedder has scored 98 goals for Monaco since joining the club in 2019. He has made 19 appearances for the French national team, last playing for them in June 2022. His club declined to comment on the open legal case involving their star player. Monaco are set to open their Ligue 1 season on Sunday, against Clermont.
In April, Ben Yedder was convicted in Spain of tax fraud during his time playing for Sevilla. He received a suspended 6-month prison sentence and was fined €133,798. The tax case will not impact his availability to play as he contests the latest charges.
