December 19, (THEWILL) – Monaco defender, Wilfried Singo, has publicly apologised to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, following a serious facial injury sustained during Wednesday’s Ligue 1 match. The incident occurred during PSG’s 4-2 victory, resulting in Donnarumma requiring ten staples to treat lacerations on the right side of his face.
Through an Instagram statement, Singo addressed the incident directly: “I would like to apologise to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face.” He concluded his message with a direct wish for the goalkeeper’s recovery.
The match officials determined the challenge to be incidental, with PSG captain, Marquinhos, later revealing that the referee considered it “part of the action.” Despite already carrying a yellow card, Singo did not receive additional disciplinary measures for the collision that forced Donnarumma’s early departure from the match.
Following the incident, PSG released footage showing both players meeting at the stadium after the final whistle. During this interaction, Donnarumma was recorded telling the Monaco defender: “Everything’s fine, no worries.” The Italian goalkeeper was replaced by Matvey Safonov and will undergo further medical examinations.
The situation took an unfortunate turn when Monaco reported that their defender became the target of racist abuse on social media platforms following the match. The club swiftly responded with a formal statement defending their player and condemning the abuse.
Monaco’s statement emphasised their position: “The club condemns in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable racist comments made about Wilfried Singo on social media after the match. Such behaviour has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch, and is totally at odds with the values that the club stands for.”
