October 28, (THEWILL) – Borussia Monchengladbach knocked Bayern Munich out of the DFB-Pokal with a 5-0 victory as Ramy Bensebaini and Breel Embolo both scored twice.
Bayern Munich’s shambolic performance at Borussia-Park on Wednesday saw them concede three goals in the first 21 minutes.
Bensebaini scored twice after Kouadio Kone put Bayern on the back foot with his opening goal for Die Fohlen, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann sat at home isolating after testing positive for the dreaded coronavirus disease.
Embolo added a quickfire brace early in the second half to help Gladbach advance to the third round, knocking Bayern out at the same stage that they were thrashed by Holstein Kiel last season.
In just the second minute, Kone took advantage of sloppy Bayern defence by side-footing in with his right foot after Alphonso Davies gifted Gladbach possession with a weak ball.
With the Bundesliga champions all over the place at the back, Jonas Hofmann should have doubled their lead when he missed the target after racing away, and Manuel Neuer showed amazing reflexes to tip Embolo’s effort over the crossbar.
In the 15th minute, Bayern were caught off guard again, and Bensebaini punished them by storming into the penalty area unmarked and sweeping in Hofmann’s cutback with his right foot.
When Lucas Hernandez was ruled to have fouled Embolo, Bensebaini calmly tapped into the back of the goal from the penalty spot, as things got much worse for the Bavarian giants.
On his 23rd birthday, Dayot Upamecano was having a nightmare, as he gave Gladbach a fourth goal six minutes into the second half by failing to deal with a high ball down the middle and allowing Embolo to score.
After that error, Upamecano was taken off, but Bayern’s defence did not improve as Embolo struck again soon after, beating a surprised Neuer after Luca Netz had sent him clear.
Bayern Munich were unable to rescue some pride when Yann Sommer denied Serge Gnabry with a fantastic save after keeping out a Robert Lewandowski header, and Josip Stanisic’s strike flew over the crossbar.
