November 05, (THEWILL) – Nigerian striker, Gift Monday, was the hero as UDG Tenerife pulled off a historic 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Playing at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium, the 22-year-old scored twice in three minutes after the break to give Tenerife their first ever victory against the Spanish giants.
Monday opened the scoring in the 54th minute, showing great determination to drive into the box and fire home with her left foot. Incredibly, just two minutes later she grabbed her second, racing clear of the Atletico defence before clinically finishing past the keeper.
Atletico, with Nigerian winger, Rasheedat Ajibade, appearing as a second-half substitute, pulled one back through Lucia Moral, but could not prevent a maiden defeat to Tenerife at the 18th attempt.
It was a fairytale afternoon for Monday and fellow Super Falcon, Esther Okoronkwo, who played the full 90 minutes for the Canary Islanders. Their efforts lifted Tenerife to seventh in the Primera Division Femenina table.
Atletico remain fourth, but boss, Manolo Cano, will be concerned at seeing their long unbeaten streak versus Tenerife finally come to an end. For Monday and her team, this historic giant-killing will live long in memory.
