September 08, (THEWILL) – An inspired performance from the Spanish national team, saw them secure an emphatic 7-1 away victory against Georgia in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Friday.
Striker, Álvaro Morata, was the standout player, netting a hat-trick to help his side capitalise on their chances. The first half was dominated by Spain, who went into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead. Morata opened the scoring with a header in the 22nd minute, before an own goal from Georgian defender, Solomon Kvirkvelia, made it 2-0. Morata and Dani Olmo added two more goals to extend the advantage.
Georgia managed to pull one back shortly after the restart, thanks to an error by Spanish goalkeeper, Unai Simón. However, Spain quickly restored their dominance, with Morata and substitute, Nico Williams, scoring in quick succession to make it 6-1.
The historic moment came in the 74th minute, when 16-year-old Lamine Yamal became Spain’s youngest ever goalscorer after coming off the bench. Yamal rounded off the scoring to complete an unforgettable night for Spain.
The result leaves Spain second in Group A on 6 points after 3 matches. Despite trailing leaders, Scotland, by 6 points, Spain have a game in hand as they aim to qualify for Euro 2024.
