October 28, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s poor start to the 2023/2024 English Premier League season continued as they fell to a 2-0 home defeat against local rivals Brentford. The result leaves Mauricio Pochettino’s side languishing in the bottom half of the table ahead of a daunting trip to high-flying Tottenham next time out.

The Blues had the better of the early chances at Stamford Bridge, with Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer both going close. However, they were made to pay for not taking their opportunities when Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock headed in after a corner just before the hour mark.

Chelsea tried to respond as the game wore on, but found clear-cut chances hard to come by against an organised Bees defence. Brentford then wrapped up the points in stoppage time, with Bryan Mbeumo rolling the ball into an empty net after neat build-up play.

The defeat piles even more misery on Blues’ manager Pochettino as they have notoriously found winning at home a tough target. Only against struggling Luton have they been able to get maximum points at home this season. He will be demanding an immediate reaction from his players for the short trip across London to face League leaders Spurs next weekend. Yet, on this evidence, it could be another long afternoon for the Chelsea faithful.
