March 21, (THEWILL) – Morocco has announced a joint bid with Spain and Portugal to host the 2030 men’s World Cup.
Chakib Benmoussa, Morocco’s Sports Minister, expressed confidence in the bid, stating that the three nations have close ties and have invested significantly in developing football infrastructure.
This transcontinental bid is the first in World Cup history and replaces Ukraine, who pulled out due to the ongoing war with Russia. The joint bid will compete against other nations in a vote at next year’s FIFA Congress.
Morocco has attempted to host the World Cup five times before, all unsuccessfully, with the most recent attempt being in 2026. However, the joint bid with Spain and Portugal is raising hopes for the North African nation.
Moroccan football journalist, Amine El Amri, stated that the public in Morocco now understand that hosting the World Cup does not need to be as costly as previously thought, especially with the infrastructure and logistics support from Spain and Portugal. The 2030 World Cup host will be decided by FIFA’s member associations at next year’s congress in Osaka, Japan.
