June 01, (THEWILL) – Following Roma’s 4-1 penalty shootout defeat against serial winner Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final, Roma Manager, Jose Mourinho, has cast uncertainty on his tenure at the club.
With the loss dashing Roma’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League, questions have emerged about the 60-year-old’s future, with reports linking him to a potential move to Les Parisiens side, Paris Saint-Germain. But, in a post-match interview, Mourinho revealed his ambivalence about remaining in the Italian capital. “I have to fight for these lads and therefore, not say objectively that I will remain,” he said.
While expressing his commitment to the team, Mourinho disclosed that he had not engaged in any contact with other clubs since December, pointing out that he still had one year remaining on his contract. Although it was Mourinho’s first defeat in a European final, he expressed pride in his team’s performance while acknowledging the toll the season had taken.
“We’re physically exhausted, mentally drained, feeling dead because we believe it’s an unjust defeat with numerous debatable incidents,” he said. The Manager highlighted the unwavering dedication and effort his players had shown throughout the season, emphasising the importance of preserving dignity and professionalism even in the face of defeat.
Mourinho also criticised English Referee, Anthony Taylor, noting that he issued an excessive number of yellow cards during the match. “It was an intense, masculine, vibrant game with a referee, who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time.” The Manager expressed surprise at the high level of referee influence in a European final, adding his discontent about the officiating.
