June 28, (THEWILL) – Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has been hit with a 10-day ban by Italy’s football federation for criticising a referee.
This means Mourinho will be forced to sit out the team’s first two matches of the upcoming Serie A season. The ban was imposed by the FIGC’s disciplinary tribunal, which stated that the suspension would commence at the beginning of the next league season, scheduled for the weekend of August 19-20.
Additionally, both Mourinho and Roma were fined €50,000 for the remarks Mourinho made regarding referee Daniele Chiffi, following Roma’s 1-1 draw against Monza in the Italian league last month. During the match, the 60-year-old Portuguese manager clashed with Chiffi, and his post-match comments described the referee as “the worst” he had ever encountered throughout his entire career.
Mourinho criticised Chiffi’s lack of human connection and empathy, saying: “He is awful, he doesn’t make any human connection and he has no empathy.” These remarks have now resulted in the disciplinary action and financial penalty imposed on Mourinho and his club.
Roma, who finished sixth in the Serie A last season and were runners-up in the Europa League, will face the challenge of beginning their league campaign without their high-profile coach in the dugout. It is left for the crew to see to it that the absence of Mourinho for the opening two matches does not have any negative impact on the team’s performance as they aim to make a strong start to the season.
