Jose Mourinho

September 29, (THEWILL) – Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma side slumped to a shocking 4-1 defeat away to Genoa in Serie A on Thursday evening. The loss leaves the capital club languishing just above the relegation zone after six games.

Genoa took an early lead through Albert Gudmundsson after just 5 minutes. Bryan Cristante equalised for Roma on 22 minutes to give them hope going into halftime. However, Genoa had other ideas and inched ahead just before the end of the first half, with Gudmundsson and Morten Thorsby combining to set up Mateo Retegui for a well-taken half-volley.

In the second period, things did not improve for the visitors. Thorsby added a third goal for the hosts after 74 minutes before Junior Messias rounded off a miserable night for Roma with a fourth goal just 7 minutes later. The porous Roma defence had no answers as Mourinho watched on helplessly from the stands.

The heavy loss leaves Roma down in 16th place with just 5 points from their opening 6 games. Mourinho’s side had been aiming for a top-four finish this campaign, but now face a battle just to avoid relegation. They sit just two points clear of the bottom three.

Genoa, meanwhile, jumped up to 11th after securing their second win of the new season under manager Alberto Gilardino. Both sides are back in action on Sunday, for their next matches in Serie A when Udinese host Genoa and Roma welcome Frosinone to the Stadio Olimpico.
