January 08, (THEWILL) – Birmingham City have announced Tony Mowbray as their new first-team manager. The former Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion boss has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Championship club. He becomes Birmingham’s third manager this season after John Eustace and Wayne Rooney.
Mowbray was enthusiastic about the new opportunity, saying: “I am excited to be joining Birmingham at this time. The new Birmingham manager brings a wealth of Football League experience. He guided Sunderland to the play-offs last season before being dismissed in December. Rooney departed Birmingham after just 83 days and 15 games in charge. The former England captain managed only two wins, explaining: “Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted.” Rooney now plans to spend time with family as he awaits his next opportunity in management.
Birmingham CEO, Garry Cook, outlined the club’s ambitions to Mowbray upon his appointment. The new manager will be keen to put his stamp on the team quickly, starting with Saturday’s home match against Swansea City. Bluenoses will hope his appointment can spark an upturn in fortunes.
