May 11, (THEWILL) – Andy Murray’s quest to find form on clay continues to elude him after a first-round defeat to Fabio Fognini at the Italian Open.
The British tennis star lost a tight match 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 to the Italian in a contest that lasted almost three hours. The defeat marks Murray’s third consecutive ATP 1000 first-round exit on clay after similar disappointments in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
Murray, a former world number one, had been looking to build on his recent victory in the Aix-en-Provence Challenger but was unable to overcome the in-form Fognini. Murray had headed to Rome with renewed confidence, having clinched his first title since 2019, and will now have to decide whether to play at Roland Garros, which starts later this month.
The 35-year-old has featured only once in the tournament in the last six years and will need to make a decision soon. Reflecting on his defeat, he said: “That is what I wanted, to see how my game felt, how I was playing and physically how I was doing in some of the longer matches before making a definitive call on it. We’ll have those discussions in the next few days.”
Despite the disappointment, Murray remained upbeat about his game, acknowledging that he played well in parts but was not consistent enough to clinch the win.
