October 13, (THEWILL) – Manchester United Football Director, John Murtough, has confirmed the club are looking into the injury crisis that has plagued their season so far.
The Red Devils have won just 3 of their first 11 matches, including suffering back-to-back UEFA Champions League defeats. Despite a promising start under manager Erik ten Hag, United have struggled for consistency, which Murtough suggested could be down to having up to 16 first-team players injured.
Defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have faced extended spells out, alongside full-backs Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia. Further absentees include Mason Mount, Sergio Reguilon, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo.
This has forced Ten Hag into shuffling his line-up, unable to field his strongest XI yet this term. Murtough confirmed at a fans’ forum that United are investigating if there are any patterns or reasons behind the volume of injuries.
Some have had unavoidable impacts, while others may reflect the demanding schedule and the 2022 World Cup. United will hope returning players can spark an upturn, starting at Sheffield United next weekend after Scott McTominay’s late winner against Brentford.
