September 11, (THEWILL) – Spanish tennis star, Rafael Nadal, is targeting a return to Grand Slam action at the 2024 Australian Open, according to his uncle and former coach Toni Nadal.
The 36-year-old has been sidelined since losing in the second round in Melbourne earlier this year, undergoing foot surgery over the summer. Toni says that if Nadal’s recovery continues smoothly, he wants to play in Australia next year.
Nadal’s Davis Cup captain David Ferrer hinted the 22-time Grand Slam champion may attempt a comeback this November if Spain qualifies for the finals. However, Toni stated Nadal’s priority is being fit for the 2024 season, especially the clay events he dominates. Recently crowned US Open champion, Novak Djokovic, is expected to be the favourite in Melbourne, as he chases a record 25th major singles title.
Djokovic’s triumph over Daniil Medvedev extended his tally to 24 Slams, putting further distance between himself and Nadal in the all-time list. Toni lavished praise on the Serb, believing Djokovic’s sustained excellence makes him the best player in history based on titles won. While crediting Roger Federer’s occasional higher levels, Toni says Djokovic has firmly established himself as the player to beat with his continuing Grand Slam success.
With two Australian Opens already, Nadal will hope his history in Melbourne can aid another deep run if he makes the planned comeback next January. However, overcoming Djokovic currently appears a monumental task given the world number one’s dominance. Fans will wait in anticipation to see if Nadal can defy expectations again in 2024.
