July 09, (THEWILL) – Akwa United demonstrated a commanding performance in the first half at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, to earn a well-deserved victory against Yobe Desert Stars.
Despite the persistent rain throughout the entire match, both teams put on an entertaining show for the spectators. Akwa United’s relentless counter-pressing strategy stifled Yobe Stars, leaving them with little time on the ball.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Chukwuebuka Anthony scored a powerful header from a James Ajako corner-kick. Just eight minutes later, Cyril Olisema extended Akwa United’s lead with an impressive long-range strike, capping off an exceptional first-half performance.
The second half saw Yobe Desert Stars grow in confidence as they tightened their defence. In a display of resilience, goalkeeper Isa Ismail saved a penalty after Chigoziem Salomon was fouled, denying Cyril Olisema the opportunity to secure a brace.
Yobe Stars managed to halve the deficit in the 55th minute when Emmanuel James found the back of the net with a low free-kick. However, Yobe Stars were unable to find an equaliser, resulting in a disappointing defeat.
In post-match comments, James was satisfied with his rare goal but lamented the loss while looking ahead to their next match. Yobe Stars will play their next Naija Super8 game on Monday, July 10, against Lobi Stars at 2pm. Later on the same day, Akwa United will face Rivers United at 4:30pm.
