October 09, (THEWILL) – With an eighth straight victory across all competitions, Napoli moved two points ahead at the top of Serie A after whipping Cremonese 4-1.

Credit to Cremonese, who matched the energy of the Partenopei, as Nigerian forward Cyriel Dessers even equalised in the second half, until late in the match when Luciano Spalletti side rallied to reveal the gap in quality between both sides.

Napoli seized the fantastic opportunity to advance to the top after Atalanta was held to a 2-2 draw by Udinese earlier even in the absence of Piotr Zielinski and Victor Osimhen. Matteo Bianchetti was penalised for clipping Kvicha Kvaratskhelia’s heel, resulting in a penalty that Matteo Politano easily converted.

Then, in the second half, Dessers scored from nine yards to draw Cremonese level. The hosts kept Napoli at bay until Cholito Simeone’s powerful header from a Mario Rui pass in the 74tg minute restored their lead. In injury time, Hirving Lozano and Mathias Olivera added goals to keep Spalletti’s side at the top of the log in Italy.

With how well they are faring in Victor Osimhen’s absence, it is unclear if Spalletti will have the Nigerian on the bench when they meet Ajax in the UEFA Champions League tie at home on Wednesday. Cremonese will next play Spezia on Sunday, as they search for their first win this season.
