September 15, (THEWILL) – Leicester City earned a convincing 4-1 away victory against Southampton on Friday night, to go top of the Championship table.
Despite conceding an early goal, the Foxes responded emphatically to claim the three points. The home side were behind after just 21 seconds when veteran striker, Jamie Vardy, capitalised on a defensive error to slot home his first league goal of the season. Southampton’s night went from bad to worse when Kasey McAteer doubled Leicester’s advantage in the 25th minute with a composed finish after being set up by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Against the run of play, Saints winger, Sam Edozie, pulled one back for the hosts in the 25th minute after being played through by Che Adams. The goal provided brief hope for Southampton but Leicester remained in control throughout. Just before the break, Wilfred Ndidi extended the visitor’s lead once again from close range.
In the second half, Leicester’s Harry Winks was cautioned and Carlos Alcaraz missed the resulting free-kick before Stephy Mavididi rounded off the scoring for the Foxes in the 67th minute.
Joe Aribo replaced Che Adams in the 78th but could do little to affect the outcome. In stoppage time, Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana received a straight red card to compound a disappointing night for the hosts. The win sees Leicester open up a two-point gap at the top of the table while Southampton remain in 7th after five games played.
