April 26, (THEWILL) Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona appears to be on the horizon, as the Catalan club is pulling all the stops in their efforts to bring the Argentine superstar back to Camp Nou.
Negotiations between Messi’s representatives and Barca officials are ongoing, with an agreement said to be close to being reached. As THEWILL previously reported, Messi’s current contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires this summer, and despite the French club’s desire to keep him, the player has not yet agreed to extend his stay in Paris.
Messi’s apparent reluctant to renegotiate at the French capital and PSG’s failure to secure a new deal for the Argentine superstar opened the door for Barcelona to pursue their former talisman. Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, has been in constant contact with the Barca hierarchy, including President Joan Laporta, who is particularly eager to bring Messi back to the club.
As Barcelona push ahead with their efforts to sign Messi, they are also exploring all possible avenues to get the deal over the line, including offering Messi a role in the club’s hierarchy or even as a board member. However, there are potential hurdles and La Liga President Javier Tebas has warned that a deal for Messi will require a lot of financial effort from Barcelona, and there is still work to be done to ensure that the contract is approved by the authorities.
In order to make the move happen, Barcelona may also have to sell some star players, including Frenkie De Jong and Ousmane Dembele, who have previously been deemed “unsellable” by the club.
