July 18, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling finish, the Netherlands defeated Switzerland 4-1 in Sheffield on Sunday, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Euro 2022.
During the opening minutes of the first half, the Swiss team had the upper hand. Sandy Maendly forced Daphne van Domselaar to make a brilliant save to keep the scores barren.
The Netherlands then believed they had a penalty before it was reversed following a VAR review. Despite their best efforts, neither the Dutch ladies nor their Swiss counterparts could find an opener in a tense 45-minute first half of football.
The first goal came fortunately for the Netherlands as after the break, Ana Crnogorcevic redirected a header into her own goal to give the Dutch the lead. Immediately after, Switzerland countered, Ramona Bachmann gave Geraldine Reuteler the opportunity to equalise, which she took.
The Swiss pressed high in a bid to find a winner but were thwarted in the final ten minutes by a brace from Romee Leuchter and a close-range strike from Victoria Pelova. The Dutch advance and will now face France in Rotherham on Saturday as Sweden easily defeated Portugal to win the group.
