January 13, (THEWILL) – Newly appointed Nigerian national team coach Eric Chelle pledged on Monday to implement an attacking football philosophy to guide the Super Eagles towards the 2026 World Cup qualification.
The former Mali coach accepted a two-year contract with the primary objective of leading Nigeria to the tournament, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
During his official introduction in Abuja, Chelle outlined his vision for the team’s playing style.
“I have always had a love for scoring goals. My teams are never short of goals, and I promise the Super Eagles will be no different.
“Football is about scoring goals and I favour an attacking style,” the 47-year-old stated.
The task ahead remains significant, with Nigeria currently positioned second from bottom in their World Cup qualifying group, having accumulated three points from four matches.
Rwanda currently leads the group on goal difference, level on seven points with South Africa and Benin, in a competition where only the group winners advance automatically.
March 2024 presents critical fixtures for Nigeria, beginning with an away match against group leaders Rwanda, followed by a home encounter with Zimbabwe, who occupy the bottom position.
These matches could prove decisive in determining Nigeria’s qualification prospects.
The former Lens captain brings some experience to the role, having recently guided Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
His managerial background also includes a spell with Algerian side MC Oran, demonstrating his familiarity with African football.
Addressing the magnitude of his appointment, Chelle remarked, “Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job. I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best.”
