November 04, (THEWILL) – The England Football Association has opened an investigation into whether Newcastle United’s new signing, Sandro Tonali, breached betting rules following his summer transfer from AC Milan.
The 23-year-old Italy international joined the Magpies in a £55 million deal but has now been suspended for 10 months by the Italian Football Federation after admitting to placing bets on matches during his previous spells with Brescia and AC Milan.
The ban was ratified by FIFA and agreed with the FA after Tonali accepted a plea bargain as part of an investigation into illegal betting. He has been fined €20,000 and will undergo therapy and make public appearances as part of his punishment.
Newcastle Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, said the probe has been a “whirlwind” and a “massive shock” but that the club’s first thought was to support and protect the player. Tonali will be able to continue training with the squad but will be ineligible to play until 27 August 2024.
Manager Eddie Howe confirmed Tonali has begun his 10-month ban and called it a “real mental test” but said the coaching staff will try to help him become a better player during this period. The club says its priority is to support the midfielder through this difficult time.
