June 21, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United and Burnley are close to agreeing on a £10 million deal for goalkeeper, Nick Pope, after the keeper emerged as Newcastle’s top goalkeeper target.
When Eddie Howe took over last year, he made it clear to the club’s hierarchy that he wanted to improve the goalkeeping department, which currently consists of Slovakia international Martin Dubravka, Mark Gillespie, Karl Darlow, and Freddie Woodman – the latter two of whom are set to leave this summer.
Newcastle has already held negotiations with Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, but a deal for Pope has quickened, with Burnley’s relegation to the Championship certainly helping.
Pope, an England international, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers, and Newcastle think he might be their number one for the next decade.
Pope is expected to have a physical this week, with personal terms not expected to be a major issue, and will become the club’s second key signing of the summer after Matt Targett’s permanent move from Aston Villa.
