January 28, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United have started talks with Arsenal about signing forward, Eddie Nketiah, on a permanent basis as the forward’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and he has no plans to extend it, citing a lack of playing time as the reason.
So far, Crystal Palace and West Ham have both expressed interest in signing Nketiah on a short-term loan, but Newcastle has signalled a willingness to bring him in on a permanent basis.
Manager Eddie Howe is a great fan of Nketiah and wanted Newcastle to try to sign him when his Arsenal contract expires in the summer, but those plans have been pushed back since Howe needs additional firepower to bring his side out of the relegation zone.
Nketiah has also attracted interest from Germany and France, but Newcastle are confident that they will be able to sign him.
Before the transfer window closes, the Magpies hope to finalise a number of transactions. Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon is anticipated to be the next player to cross the line, but Howe has stated that he expects more players to follow.
There are also talks underway with Bayer Leverkusen about a trade for left-back Mitchel Bakker, with Sassuolo’s Rogerio also being considered.
Howe also wants a new centre-back. Negotiations with Sevilla for Diego Carlos have come to a halt, and Newcastle are also eyeing Brighton’s Dan Burn, as well as Liverpool’s Nat Phillips.
