May 04, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United’s majority shareholders, PIF, are showing keen interest in bringing Paris Saint-Germain star, Neymar, to the English Premier League side.
The Magpies are looking to make a “marquee” signing this summer and see the fact that they are set to finish in the top four and qualify for the UEFA Champions League as an advantage to attract high-profile players. The rumours of a potential move for 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo amounted to nothing, as he was not seen as a natural fit in the Newcastle team by manager, Eddie Howe.
However, Neymar, a 31-year-old left-sided forward, is considered a natural fit in the squad and would not only add star power, but also elevate the team’s overall quality. These are all qualities they would need to compete on several fronts, and especially in Europe, next season.
PSG is reportedly open to selling Neymar this summer, given their desire to fix what many consider to be a broken culture at the club after Lionel Messi’s potential departure. While a handful of clubs in the world would be able to facilitate a deal for the Brazilian, Newcastle’s UCL financing would make a deal worth more than £75m possible.
The news that Newcastle United could potentially sign Neymar has been met with contrasting opinions from pundits with those opposing the idea, basing their criticisms on the frequency of Neymar’s injury history. Still, some fans welcome it as a positive step in the right direction.
