February 22, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has reportedly suffered a sprained ankle and ligament damage during the club’s win over Lille on Sunday.
As THEWILL reported, the Brazilian went down after a tackle by Lille’s Benjamin Andre and had to be stretchered off the pitch. PSG confirmed the diagnosis in a statement and announced that Neymar will undergo further tests next week.
This injury is the latest in a series for the Brazilian star, who has had several ankle injuries since the 2013/2014 season. Recently, his future with PSG has become uncertain, and he has been linked with moves to other clubs like Newcastle and Chelsea.
On their own part, PSG has also been struggling since the start of the year, with a string of losses in all competitions, which has led to rumours of a threat to manager Christophe Galtier’s position. Neymar’s absence may increase the pressure on Kylian Mbappe, who has only just returned from a thigh injury himself.
Mbappe admitted that he should not have returned to play in the Bayern Munich game and is still not at 100% with a return leg against Bayern looming next month. PSG will face Marseille in a crucial top-of-the-table clash on Sunday, and they will have to do it without Neymar. Galtier will hope the Mbappe/Lionel Messi combination will make a difference again.
