February 18, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ghanaian football player, Christian Atsu, who tragically lost his life in the recent Turkey earthquake.
Atsu was a striker for Turkish Super Lig team, Hatayspor, having previously played for English Premier League sides Everton, Chelsea, and Newcastle, and represented his country in the Ghanaian national team.
Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Twitter, stating that the player’s body was recovered almost two weeks after the earthquake, under the rubble of his home. The news was disheartening for the football community, as Hatayspor had initially reported that Atsu had been rescued with injuries, before later changing their position.
Augustine Eguavoen, NFF Technical Director, posted on Twitter: “Thoughts and prayers to the family of Ghanaian International Christain Atsu and the entire Ghanaian Football Family, at this difficult time. On behalf of the Nigerian Football Federation, accept our heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Atsu had scored the game-winning goal in a February 5 Super Lig match for his club, a last minute free-kick, in what will be remembered as his final moments as a footballer.
