November 26, (THEWILL) – Renowned Hollywood actor, Forest Whitaker, known for his powerful performances, has deepened his connection to his Nigerian roots. On April 6, 2009, he was honoured with a chieftaincy title in Imo State, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in his exploration of ancestral ties.
Whitaker, an American actor and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, was bestowed the title of ‘Nwannedinamba of Nkwerre’ during a ceremony in Imo State. Translated as “A Brother in a Foreign Land,” this title positions Whitaker as a chief among the Igbo community of Nkwerre.
The actor, who previously underwent a DNA test, revealing his mother’s Akan ancestry and his father’s Igbo descent, expressed immense pride in his Nigerian heritage. He has consistently showcased his connection to Africa by taking on Black roles in movies, emphasising the richness of his African roots.
Beyond his contributions to the film industry, Forest Whitaker has taken on a new mission. As a UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, he has pledged to impart his knowledge to Nollywood film producers and actors, aiming to elevate the quality of Nigerian cinema on the global stage.
Having studied Acting at the University of Southern California, Whitaker’s career has been decorated with numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In a statement, Whitaker expressed his deep connection to Nigeria, saying, “I am proud of my Nigerian Igboland lineage. I have Nigerian blood flowing in my veins. I am from Nkwerre community in Imo State, which is why I visit Nigeria three times every year. Nigeria is my home, Africa is my root.”
