June 03, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated 1-0 by Ecuador at the 25,000-seat Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, in the second match under new coach, Jose Peseiro.
In the Friday morning game, local time, Pervis Estupián’s early goal was enough for Ecuador to beat Nigeria to end the Super Eagles’ tour of the United States ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
THEWILL recalls that Nigeria also lost 2-1 against Mexico in a game of two halves in Dallas on Saturday, in coach Peseiro’s debut fixture with the team.
The encounter against Ecuador takes place exactly one week before the Super Eagles face Sierra Leone’s Leone Stars at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Thursday, June 9 in the first match of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.
Nigeria was drawn in Group A, alongside Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau and Mauritius for a ticket to the next AFCON, Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
