
May 02, (THEWILL) – Team Nigeria has dominated the ongoing 2023 African Under-18 and Under-20 Athletics Championships in Ndola, Zambia, by winning a total of 12 medals on the second day of the competition.
Nigerian athletes claimed seven gold, five silver and five bronze medals, bringing their total medal count to 17. Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to perform well in the competition, saying that their target was to improve on their previous outings.
He said: “I am confident we will win more medals on Monday (yesterday), and our target is to improve on our previous outings in the competition.” Samuel Onikeku, Technical Director of the AFN, followed suit by praising the athletes for their performances so far in the competition.
Nigeria’s impressive performance at the competition has put them in a neck-to-neck battle with South Africa, to control the medals table. The 42 athletes representing Nigeria at the championships have shown that they are well prepared for the competition, with several athletes still prepared to win more medals in their various events.
