June 25, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, is set to bid farewell to Serie A side Salernitana and make a return to England, as his loan spell with the Italian club comes to an end on June 30.
Troost-Ekong joined Salernitana in January, with the club paying €500,000 for a six-month loan deal. The loan agreement included an option for Salernitana to buy the Nigerian international permanently based on his performance. Although he faced some injury setbacks, Troost-Ekong managed to make a notable impact during his time with Salernitana.
The Super Eagles defender featured in nine league matches and even netted his first Serie A goal, which secured a crucial 3-2 victory over Udinese Calcio. His contribution helped Salernitana secure a 15th-place finish and retain their Serie A status for the upcoming season.
However, recent reports from Italy suggest that Salernitana are planning a major squad overhaul this summer, which means they will not exercise their option to sign Troost-Ekong permanently. As a result, the 27-year-old will be returning to his former club, Watford, whose Championship campaign saw them finish in 11th place. Troost-Ekong’s contract with Watford is set to expire on June 30, 2025.
