September 17, (THEWILL) — Nigerian football defender, Onome Ebi, announced her retirement from professional football on Wednesday, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable 24-year career that began in 2001. The 42-year-old made the announcement through her social media channels, marking the end of an era for women’s football in Nigeria.
Ebi’s journey started with Omidiran Babes before she moved to Bayelsa Queens, where she developed the skills that would define her career. Her domestic performances earned her a call-up to the Super Falcons in 2003, beginning what would become a record-breaking international career for Nigerian women’s football.
During her time with the national team, Ebi earned 109 caps, more than any other woman in Nigerian football history. She participated in six FIFA Women’s World Cups spanning two decades from 2003 to 2023, while also helping Nigeria claim four African Women’s Cup of Nations titles.
Her club career took her across Europe, where she played for Swedish sides Pitéa IF and Sunnanå SK, before joining FC Minsk in Belarus. After spending more than 10 years playing abroad, Ebi returned home in 2023 to join Naija Ratels, completing her final chapter as a player.
The retired defender now plans to focus on developing young talent and supporting footballers across Africa. Her post-playing career will centre on mentoring emerging players and advocacy work, extending her impact on women’s football beyond her playing achievements.
