September 11, (THEWILL) – Watford’s full cast of Super Eagles players, William Troost-Ekong, Oghenekaro Etebo and Emmanuel Dennis all featured in their 2-0 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Etebo was Watford’s best performer on the day as he commandeered the midfield with controlled efficiency. The hosts held the marauding Spanish forward Adama Traore throughout the first half with neither able to find an opener.
Both sides had decent opportunities to find the first goal. Etebo’s teammate Moussa Sissoko was denied by Jose Sa in the Wolves goal, while Watford’s goalie Daniel Bachmann saved a strike from Nelson Semedo to make sure the sides went into the break goalless.
It was the visitors who seized the initiative, scoring the opener from an own goal. Troost-Ekong’s centreback partner, Francisco Sierralta, guided a Fernando Marcal cross into his own net.
In the 77th minute, Etebo, who was on a yellow card, was substituted for Ken Sema as his part in the tie ended. Yet, there was another goal in the game for the visitors. With seven minutes of regulation time left, Hwang Hee-Chan notched a debut goal for Bruno Lage’s men after coming off the bench to put the victory beyond doubt.
With the victory, Wolves secured their first win of the Premier League campaign. Admittedly, it was not a vintage performance by either side, but it was good enough to claim the three points for Wolves.
After a brilliant start against Villa on August 14, Watford have now lost three games on the bounce. They are next up against fellow newly-promoted side Norwich at Carrow Road.
