BEVERLY HILLS, April 05, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s imposing 6ft 7in forward Paul Onuachu, who has been in scintillating form for club and country this season, was on target again on Monday as his club Racing Genk registered a 3-2 win over Oud-Heverlee Leuven in a Belgian First Division A clash at King Power at the Den Dreef Stadion.
With the goal, the grand striker has now scored in his last three matches for club and country. He scored twice coming off the bench in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho for the Super Eagles of Nigeria last month.
He kept up he has done all season to become the highest goal scorer in the Belgian top flight. Currently, only Bayern Munich’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has managed to find the net more than the Super Eagles star in the entire 2020-2021 campaign in Europe.
Genk started brilliantly when Kristian Thorstvedt found the back of the net seven minutes into the game for the opener. It remained in Genk’s favour all through the second period until the 74th minute when Xavier Mercier equalised for the hosts.
The advantage was restored when Theo Bongonda made it 2-1 in the 81st minute. The slim lead lasted until the 83rd minute when Onuachu made it 3-1 to ease the pressure on Genk such that when Thomas Henry pulled a goal back for the hosts in the second minute of extra time, it did not matter much for the visitors.
In the final minutes of the match, Onuachu made way for his fellow Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers, who came in as a sub for a brief run around. Onuachu’s goal contribution makes it 30 goals combined for club and country so far this season for the fiery forward.
